Gateway laptop keyboard has stopped working?

First it started with the mouse touch pad failing on me, i had to get a USB mouse, now the keys refuse to work!
my laptop is basically on its last leg, the top left hinge is broken and there seems to be some wiring sticking out [i had no idea wires were in the laptop screen]...are the keyboards wiring in the laptop? is closing and opening the laptop making the wiring faulty? please help! it's about a 2-3 year old laptop.
