If you use your Dell Inspiron 15 laptop frequently, the keyboard may begin to wear out over time. The Dell Inspiron 15 keyboard includes stamped text on each of the keys and a fragile assembly beneath to trigger the keys when you engage them. If debris, food or general use has caused your keyboard to wear or stick, you can replace it. Buy a replacement keyboard from a computer supply store and change it at home, avoiding the cost of a technician.

Place an anti-static strap on your wrist. Connect the opposite end to a bare metal area near your workspace. Shut down your Dell Inspiron 15 laptop. Disconnect any additional components connected to your computer. Flip the laptop over and slide the release lever to remove the battery.

Turn the computer upright, open the display and press the Power button to ground the components. Lay the display flat, opening the Inspiron completely. Locate the indent area on the right side of the hinge cover at the joint of the laptop. Insert a small, flat-bladed screwdriver into the indent area and pry up the hinge cover. Remove the hinge cover and set it aside.

Remove the two screws securing the top of the keyboard using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the Dell Inspiron 15 keyboard slightly to access the connection behind the board. Pull up on the tab on the connector to disconnect the keyboard. Lift the keyboard out of position.

Line up the tabs on the bottom of the new Dell Inspiron 15 keyboard with the slots near the bottom of the Inspiron. Connect the motherboard connection to the attachment on the back of the keyboard. Lay the keyboard into place. Replace the two retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Line up the hinge cover by inserting the left edge first. Press the hinge cover into place until the entire cover has locked into position. Close the laptop cover and turn the Inspiron upside down.

Insert the battery into the compartment, pressing it into place until the retaining lock clicks. Reconnect the power cord and any other devices. Remove the anti-static strap from your wrist. Turn on the power to your laptop and test your new keyboard.
