Remove a Compaq Presario CQ50 Keyboard
The keyboard on the Compaq Presario CQ50 may need to be removed for replacement or to allow access to the inside of the computer -- whether to upgrade equipment or to fix other pieces of hardware. Unlike most other laptops, where the cover just runs across the top of the keyboard, the Compaq Presario CQ50 keyboard is framed in a keyboard cover, which can prove intimidating upon initial inspection. However, the cover doesn't actually block the keyboard's removal, making the process easier than it may first appear.
Shut down the computer from the Start Menu and allow the system to turn all the way off.
Disconnect the power supply cable and detatch all the components that are plugged into ports on the computer.
Close the display, turn the computer base-side-up and remove the battery pack from its bay just below the display hinge.
Extract the three screws from the inside edge of the battery pack bay nearest the battery pack release latch.
Turn the computer top-side-up and open the display so that it lays flat on your work space.
Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the seam between the first key on the numbers row and the and the keyboard cover to disengage the tab that locks the Compaq Presario CQ50 keyboard into place. Do this again between the top volume key on the right side of the computer and the keyboard cover.
Lift the top of the Compaq Presario CQ50 keyboard and gently move it toward the display so that you can see the keyboard cable underneath it.
Disconnect the keyboard cable and remove the keyboard from the computer.
