How to Format a Dell Inspiron 1520

The Inspiron 1520 is a laptop computer manufactured and sold by Dell. The laptop features a dual-core processor, up to 4 gigabytes of system memory and a variety of case colors. The Inspiron 1520 is formatted by inserting a Windows install disc and following the directions. Formatting the hard drive is useful when selling, disposing of or otherwise getting rid of the computer. Formatting is also used before reinstalling the operating system after a virus, user error or other event causes it to become inoperable.

Back up any important information on the hard drive. After formatting the hard drive, this information is difficult or impossible to recover. Backup sources include external drives, additional hard drives, network drives or other storage sources.
Insert the Windows installation disc. Any version from Windows XP or newer will format the drive. Restart the computer.
Follow the on-screen directions to boot from the disc. Usually this involves pressing a function key and then selecting the appropriate drive from a boot list. Allow the Windows Setup application to load.
Follow the on-screen directions to format and repartition the hard drive. This process takes several minutes to over an hour to complete, depending on the size of the drive. Continue with the Windows installation, if desired, or shut the computer off if you are getting rid of the computer and do not wish to install the operating system.
